hello parents I'm Randy Britton I'm the technology director here at Grant Village School and I'm here today to talk to you about technology and your kids is they come on in here to grab the Village School technology plays a pretty important role in students lives these days that's one thing that we've learned from covid-19 that technology is the way for many of them to communicate with each other with family and with the school when it comes to doing their schoolwork so really we try and stress three things there of major importance to to the kids is there Harry Griffith Middle School we talked to about being safe online a respectful of Technology and responsible and how they use technology and you'll hear the safe respectful and responsible a lot as the kids go through GPS but I try I put it in the context of technology in their lives on the internet his digital citizen so you'll hear that term also digital Citizen and digital citizenship and what does that mean to you and to your kids digital citizenship is about being a part of a community our community here at Grant Village School and also a part of the digital world that we all live in today too and so there's a few things that we try and emphasize with the kids also we were talking about digital citizenship clearly we do the safe and respectful and responsible peace but we also talked about things like only talk to people you know in the real world always ask permission from an adult before you go online and then this one super important in this is one that I think I really need your help with is to go to places that are just right for them so what do we mean we stayed just right for you when we're talkin to the kids just right for them we mean the same sort of thing we mean when we were talking about books very often when kids are first learning how to read they have a hard time selecting books that are appropriate that very often don't pick things that have words that are just too hard for them or maybe to advance to reading level where once they get to be better reader sometimes they pick books that are there beyond that they're ready to go do things. They're really so when it comes to the internet and being online this idea of just right for them is super important particularly if they have siblings or if their parents are you a lot of time online or even playing games three awesome kids can be exposed to things that may not be just right for them by older siblings or by being around a parent when they're doing things like perhaps playing games online that's something that you can help us with particularly with your kids is being sure that they're going to places that are just right for them so good digital citizenship is really what it's all about for them and I'm sure many of you have a lot of questions about what's appropriate how do we use technology at GPS and how can you get help with those sorts of things even when you're at home well I'm sort of your One-Stop resource for a lot of that but there's also a lot of other resources available to you online on the GPS website we have a digital copy of this book here which is called in ETC chatting with kids about being online and this book is really great for parents because it has great information about things like how you find the proper content how do you communicate to young kids about what they should do online things like parental controls when they're using their technology and home password and using public Wi-Fi all those or something or right in here and this is a great starting point for you to have a conversation with your child about being online and doing things that are appropriate so that's what I have for an introduction for all of you thank you very much for your time and invite you also to come talk to me in person when you get the opportunity I will be talking with your kids about being online and being online safely and being good digital citizen The Thinker looking forward to meeting you all in person have
